October 22, 2003 | TOTP Interview 'Baby or old lady?' |
-- [Thanks to Babyposh for posting]
It's been a while since Emma Bunton had to try and convince anyone she was a baby - and with her clear skills in the walking/talking/chewing her own food departments, it's amazing the ruse ever worked. But does that mean she's over the hill? We found out...

TOTP: Chocolate cake or cheese and biscuits?
Emma: Chocolate cake
TOTP: Bouncy castle or comfy sofa?
Emma: Comfy sofa.
TOTP: Bottle of pop or flask of soup?
Emma: Bottle of pop
TOTP: Trainers or sensible shoes?
Emma: Trainers
TOTP: Fluffy parka or cardigan?
Emma: Fluffy parka.
TOTP: Bridge or rounders?
Emma: [laughs] Rounders!
TOTP: Nightclubbing or a nice walk in the country?
Emma: Nightclubbing.
TOTP: Email or post?
Emma: Email.
TOTP: Being respectful or taking the mickey?
Emma: Being respectful.
TOTP: Hip hop graffiti or stone-cladding?
Emma: Hip hop, but not graffiti.

The TOTP Verdict: Well done. You scored seven out of ten. You are officially over twice as baby as you are old lady.
Emma: Awww! That just means I'm growing up!

TOTP: Having got that important stuff out of the way, what's going on with you at the minute?
Emma: Ooh, very busy. Obviously the single 'Maybe' is out on the 13th October, which is great, and I'm just doing TVs. Which is quite different cos I'm doing some dancing. It's been fab, I love this track. It's very up. And everyone seems to be really enjoying it.

TOTP: So, if you're dancing, is this like a return to your Spice past?
Emma: I'm moving, I'm moving. It's great. But I think that the inspiration was more from musical films from back in the '60s and '70s and stuff. We've taken some dance moves from there, which has been great. Very different.

TOTP: How did you end up writing a song you could dance to?
Emma: It's something I wrote lyrically and for the melodies I worked with a guy called Yak (Bondy). It's just about when you first think you're in love and you're not quite sure but you get quite excited by it and it's all a bit of a mad time. And the video really show that, I think, cos the dance is very controlled and then we all of a sudden go mad. I think you get a bit of that when you fall in love, that madness.

TOTP: Have you spoken to Melanie C recently?
Emma: I have, yes.

TOTP: She's had a weird time of it...
Emma: She has, bless her. But she'll be fine. She's a very determined young lady. She'll be up and about soon. I think she's just got to relax for a bit and take some time. She's gone home, so she's just relaxing.

TOTP: Did you watch her on The Games?
Emma: Yes. I loved it. I just thought how rubbish I would be! [laughs] But it was good fun.

TOTP: Would you ever do any post-celebrity TV shows?
Emma: [Gasps at 'post-celebrity'] Oooh! [Thinks] Well, I've been so busy. Obviously music is so important to me, so I generally stick to that. No. I'm quite a private person, too...

TOTP: Having conquered the world with your pop music, do you have any advice for the likes of Alex Parks?
Emma:I think I would definitely say to anyone that they should travel. It's such a big world out there, and they should definitely go abroad and be international. The one thing I've been thinking about which is different is that when we were doing it it was all about having fun, not knowing quite what was going on, and just enjoying it. We didn't really know where we were gonna be in the charts, we weren't styled, we did our own styling. We wrote our own tracks and it was all much more fun. Whereas I think today it's a little bit more serious about everything, and if you're not a No.1 it's upsetting. You've got to keep it fun and make sure you enjoy it and go with it. I think that's why people really identified with us cos we were just going with it and making it fun.

TOTP: You weren't afraid to make party music either. What did you think when Girls Aloud came out with a similar 'girls on a night out' approach...
Emma: They're really fiesty and I'm a big fan. You always saw that with us, we were really animated and you could see that we were enjoying every second of it. That's something we could bring back a bit more. I think people need to have a good time with it, really.

TOTP: Do you think the Spice Girls are ripe for rediscovery?
Emma: I'd like to think so. Even today we all get positive feedback and again I think because it was very new and exciting it's always gonna be something that won't be done again. People have always been positive about the Spice Girls and that's great.

TOTP: How bored are you answering questions about Victoria's marriage?
Emma: [Gets flustered] Ummm...Well the thing is...I mean...y'know...they're very happy, I know them as a couple and as parents and that's how I know them. Luckily I don't get asked too much.

October 21, 2003 | New Interview |

My London: Emma Bunton
By Alistair Duncan, Evening Standard
17 October 2003
Pop singer Emma Bunton likes her creature comforts. She's got a massive bed, huge sofas and two cars. She also likes trips to her local, a good old-fashioned street party and weekends away with her mum. She tells Alistair Duncan what she loves and loathes about London.

How long have you lived there? Four years. Before that I was in Cockfosters - a different part of town, but still North.

Who's in your secret address book? There's a lovely restaurant near my house called Villa Bianca that does takeaway specially for me. And the O2 Centre on Finchley Road: it's like a Warner Village multiplex - loads of restaurants and cinema screens.

What have been your most memorable London meals? I'm a huge fan of Nobu but the last time I went my car was towed away. Now I just eat locally so I don't have to drive.

Harvey Nicks or Selfridges? I'd say Harvey Nicks just has the edge. It's smaller, a bit more compact. I always get lost in Selfridges.

What do you miss most when you're out of London? Driving in London. I like the independence of it. I miss just getting in a car and driving to Covent Garden or over the river to see a friend. Driving along the river at night is particularly special.

What are your favourite home comforts? My bed, first and foremost. On tour with the Spice Girls, we were staying at a Four Seasons hotel. We all thought the beds there were fantastic so we found out what they were and we all got one.

What is your life philosophy? Have a laugh and go for it. I never take myself too seriously.

What was the last book you bought? Out of the Dark by Linda Caine and Robin Royston. It's a book about a woman who gets incredibly depressed and finds help by discovering her past lives. I'm very much into the spiritual thing. My mum does a lot of Reiki healing and reflexology.

What was the last CD you bought? The Best of George Benson. I'm really into soul and the whole Motown thing.

Do you have a favourite pub? The Orange Tree in Whetstone. It's a favourite of mine from when I was younger. It's lovely in the summer - it has a pond outside that you can sit by.

When is your new album out and how would you describe it? The album, called Simply Me, is out early next year. I'm really confident now - I've written all the lyrics and a lot of the melodies and it's a very strong album with a real Sixties feel to it. I wanted it to sound really live.

What advice would you give to a tourist? Try out the London Eye. I haven't actually been on it myself but my mum tells me it's great. Either that or come to my house if you want to get a good view: it's the best in London!

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day? Make everyone have a street party. I remember the ones when Charles and Diana got married - all the sandwiches and cakes.

What is your earliest London memory? Walking past Selfridges at Christmas with my mum and seeing a huge King Kong on the side of the building. I gave out a huge scream. I've got this fear of big boats and other large things now. I'm sure it's from that.

What is in your autumn wardrobe? I love the freshness of autumn - it makes me dig out all my cream and red autumnal coats. I love Missoni and Dolce & Gabbana. And I've just got a lovely jumper-cum-coat from Frost French.

How do you get around town? I've got two cars: a blue Merc SLK and a navy blue Range Rover which I drive if I'm out with the girls.

Where were the last three places you went on holiday? Most recently, the South of France, near Nice. I went down with loads of girlfriends - there was lots of sunbathing, eating and playing silly games. It was great. Before that, it was Paris. But I also went quite recently to a health farm with my mum for the weekend.

What perfume do you wear? I like Eclat d'Arpège and Issey Miyake. It's nice to wear a different one each day.

What are your extravagances? My sofas, which are enormous - two people can lie on them end to end. And my candles - I like to have them throughout the house.

What was the last play you saw in London and did you enjoy it? The Graduate with Jerry Hall. It was fantastic and Jerry was very good. I like to go out in the West End: I've seen Chicago five times. I'm also a big movie fan, but nothing has bowled me over recently. I enjoyed Moulin Rouge, though.

-= Rumour Warning =-
The following was posted by Mel2Vicem on DenDen forums
January 5 -- Emma Bunton - I'll Be There

(The release date info is from a reliable poster at Dotmusic(Acer Ben). Personally I think the title of the track is quite ballad-like, but I don't know and titles usually don't determine the tempo of a track anymore. So it's obvious the album will be released 2 weeks later...so it'll be released in just 3 months time)

October 15, 2003 | Spice Pair On A Role |
-- [From The Sun]
THEY said it was all downhill after the SPICE GIRLS – but GERI HALLIWELL doesn’t seem to mind. The former Ginger Spice was snapped rollerskating in Santa Monica, California. Looks like fun, but I’d still rather be in EMMA BUNTON’s shoes – working up a sweat with super-fit blokes.

Baby Spice performed her new single Maybe, which is No5 in the midweek chart, at London’s G-A-Y club. Emma opted for a Sixties-style look, showing off her shapely legs in a mini and her figure with a plunging neckline.

Meanwhile, their old bandmate MEL C is laid up after damaging knee ligaments on Channel 4 celeb athletics show The Games. I wonder what’s become of that POSH one?

October 12, 2003 | Emma In Absolutely Fabulous |
-- [From Emma Generation]
Singer Emma Bunton is turning to TV comedy for a one-off appearance in Absolutely Fabulous. The former Spice Girl is to appear in an episode of the hit BBC series to be screened on October 17. Emma, 27, plays a client of PR boss Edina, alias Jennifer Saunders. The singer launches into a rant, pointing the finger at Edina during a showdown.

She tells Edina: "If you think I'm going to take that kind of s*** from a sweaty overeater you have another thing coming." Emma is widening her horizons with plans for more TV work alongside her solo singing career.

October 10, 2003 | Being Emma Bunton |
-- [From UK.Gay.com, thanks to spicy_girl for posting]
What have you been up to recently?
I’ve been locked up in a basement working on the album. Been on a couple of holidays with my girls where we did nothing apart form play silly games and sunbathe and eat.

Do you you feel like you can come back and give it your all?
Yes, absolutely – I love performing and I’m lucky enough to have been writing my own stuff so as soon as I get up on stage I’m really passionate about what I’m singing. I just opened The Style Awards with Maybe and it was such a great atmosphere – I really enjoyed it.

Has ‘Maybe’ been received well?
Yes – definitely. I think it’s a real ‘up’ song and it’s very different from what’s out there at the moment. It’s quite nice to hear something so different. It’s actually written about not knowing if you are actually in love or not – you can’t eat or sleep and it almost drives you mad wondering if it’s real or not. That’s where the video reflects the lyrics in the song.

Talking of lyrics, there are actually some lines that I would like to ask you about in ‘Maybe’ – ‘Love isn’t funny, when it’s burning inside – when all you think of is how to get through the night.’ Now, were you experiencing some lady problems at all when you wrote that?
(Emma falls into uncontrollable fits of giggles). No! No! Oh blimey – well, we’ve all been there haven’t we? Uhm - I was actually thinking about when it hurts…although I prefer that thought! I’m probably going to be grinning to that bit every time I sing it now!

Do you feel that your change in music style has been a natural progression or is it something you made a conscious decision about?
Oh it’s definitely a natural progression but I think that obviously I have been learning the whole time. I’m still experimenting with different styles of music, but I do feel I’ve found my niche. I’ve always been a big Motown fan and I love musicals and entertainment. I knew it would be hard, but I think the whole album has this whole sixties classic feel to it and I’m really proud of it – it’s worked so well.

You’ve been in the business a while now – how do you think you’ve changed, looking back?
I’ve become more confident. Just everything has been a learning experience. Although being naïve is a good thing – I had such a ball with the girls – that’s all it was about. I still want to keep the fun and don’t want to get too serious about life and just keep learning and look forward to the future.

Are you happy?
I’m VERY happy. Very independent. I love it.

You must have a new audience now to a certain extent, so is that quite nice for you to have something different to offer?
It is great – particularly when people are getting where I’m coming from now. There are those that remember the Spice Girls, and those who haven’t got a clue – I just love all my different audiences.

Which audience do you prefer – straight, gay or children?
They are all obviously great – I must admit, I am doing G.A.Y. next week and I’m so excited about it. The atmosphere is amazing and I just have a laugh. It’s always great fun. Sometimes with adults you are expected to entertain, whereas with gay audiences I have a laugh and just enjoy it which is amazing and it really shows – it’s a bloody good laugh!

If times were really hard, and you could go unrecognised – would you ever resort to porn?
Uhm. No I don’t think so! Next!

Are there any new artists or talent that you think will do really well?
I think Roxanne from Pop Idol has a fantastic voice and I think she will do really well. Also, I loved Lemar – I’m looking forward to his new album and I think The Darkness are fantastic and I hope they do really well.

What’s your secret music confession?
Well I’m quite honest – I love my Grease album – there are so many! I love all types of music and I’m not really embarrassed about it. I love Barbara Streisand. Not sure about the Cheeky Girls though – that just scares me. It’s wrong.

Apart form this one, what’s the most stupid question you’ve been asked.
People don’t normally believe me but being asked what kind of biscuit I would be. And ofcourse I get the usual Beckham questions. You know what – just ask them! I’m only a mate and that’s it.

Don’t worry I wasn’t going to ask about them or Geri.
Good!

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever worn?
Years ago I bought a lovely yellow dress with butterflies all over it and matching shoes. Hmm….nice! At least my mates can chuck photos if they’re crap – mine end up in the bloody papers!

What are your general views of the press.
Well it’s a job for them, it’s a job for me – I expect them to be there. So if I don’t want to be photographed I just don’t go out. As long as they don’t touch my family I’m OK – I know what it’s about. We need each other at the end of the day.

If you were to wake up tomorrow and realise you were gay, who would you tell and what kind of girl would you go for?
Well I’d definitely tell my girlfriends as we’ve already talked about it. We all talk about attractive girls. I like pretty girls – but it’s so hard to choose! I do find women very attractive, but I just don’t know.

I like Kylie myself.
Really? Ooh no. She’s not the type I’d go for – she’s very pretty though! I think Cameron Diaz is lovely, and Charlize Theron is nice even though I always get her name wrong.

So what do you think of the civil partnership bill and those who are against it?
Well I really don’t understand that people can deny someone being happy. People should be allowed to do what they want. Being gay to me doesn’t even register because it’s something that I’m surrounded by in the industry and so I can’t understand why people would want to stop someone doing what they want in life.

So what kind of biscuit would you be then?
End the interview! Get out!

The fab new single from Emma Bunton, called Maybe is out on Monday 13 October. She will also be performing at G.A.Y on the same day.

October 4, 2003 | MAYBE IT'S EMMA (DotMusic Interview) |
-- [From DotMusic]
Emma - the artist formerly known as Baby Spice and Emma Bunton - steps back in time as part of her ongoing transformation.

'Maybe' (out October 13) sees Emma re-cast as part sophisticated style icon, part tempting minx in a new revival of Austin Powers proportions.

Her lavish new video and the dance scene where Emma is joined by a troupe of dancers were inspired by the 60s cult movie, Sweet Charity.

'Maybe' was one of the tracks Emma highlighted herself as one to watch for when dotmusic spoke to her back in May - see full interview here.

Details of Emma's second solo album are still underwraps but it'll feature her recent single 'Free Me'. For all the latest on Emma check out her official site.
