EMMA BUNTON WORLDPOP INTERVIEW  -   [From Baby Spice Galaxy ]
All Of Her!

Baby Spice is bouncing back with a new single out, plus a new album and
tour in the pipeline. But will any of this mark the demise of her old band?
Emma Bunton talks to worldpop...

1. Emma on the new single, its true meaning and the forthcoming tour...
worldpop: Why did you choose We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight for the next
release?
Emma: We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight is the danciest track on the album,  it's got a really good feel to it. It's Christmas and I think we need a party track for everyone to get ready to. It's got a disco edge that people
can have a good boogie to.

worldpop: Is it a rude title?
Emma: For me the song is about when you go out with your girls and have  a really good night out, you end up back at the flat with all your girlfriends and you have a real laugh. But... it can mean whatever you want it to mean.

worldpop: What's in the pipeline for you?
Emma: I'm really busy doing loads of promotion for the single, then I'm off to Australia for a break. After that I'm going to take a break for Christmas and then next year I'm planning to your, hopefully around February or  March.

worldpop: What sort of show can we expect?
Emma: I want it to be really visual, like a party where people can join in, do the dance routines and sing along. I'm hoping to get the guitar out. Lots of things are going to be going on.

2. Emma on landing in America, the next album and becoming a hip hop artist...
worldpop: Are you still planning to tour America?
Emma: I am really busy here and I want to get the tour on the road. I'm taking my time with America because I think with America you have to spend months over there. At the moment I am busy here, the album is doing so well.

worldpop: If you made a big splash in America, would you move over there a la Craig David?
Emma: That's a tricky one. You have to think about your fans. I am  taking everything into consideration and making sure my fans are ready before I go over to America and disappear for a while.

worldpop: Who would you like to work with?
Emma: There's lots of people I would like to work with. Janet Jackson, Charlene Spiteri but at the moment I am concentrating on writing my own albums and having singles that I can perform on my own.

worldpop: Are you working on a second album?
Emma: I'm writing ideas down in my little black book. I haven't hit the studio yet. I'm so busy but I'm having such a good time

worldpop: If you could do a white label. What style would you like to  do it in?
Emma: Well I'm a big R&B and hip hop fan. It'd be funny if I did a real hip hop track, or maybe something classical.

3. On the rumours of a spice split, problems with Virgin and Emma's favourite artists...
worldpop: What's going on with the Spice Girls, are they splitting up?
Emma: We are not splitting up. We're the best of friends and we support  each other completely. Most artists change their record companies and their managers all the time but you only hear about it when the Spice Girls do. At the end of the day we're a team and all great friends so I don't see how having different managers will change that.

worldpop: There are rumours of trouble with Virgin, what is going on?
Emma: I think people are just making things up cos people love gossip. I'm having a whale of a time. I'm doing really well at the moment. The album's gone gold throughout the world. I'm really happy and having a great  time.

worldpop: Acts like steps and Westlife have said they are avoiding solo careers because of what has happened to the Spice Girls.
Emma: I think everyone should stop being so negative. I have had a No 1  for two weeks, a No 5 and a gold album that went in at No 4. I don't understand where all this negativity is coming from. I feel that as solo artists we have done well but the press is still overly negative.

worldpop: Who are you listening to at the moment?
Emma: I love Anastacia. I love listening to Destiny's Child. Damage have a great album. I listen to all types of music. I like a bit of blues now and again.

The Grill - Emma Bunton  --  WHO WEEKLY MAGAZINE Dec. 3, 2001 - No. 510
After wowing Australian audiences at Rumba, Spice Girl Emma Bunton, 25, talked the talk with
Julietta Jameson.

Congratulations on your record. It's very poppy and catchy.
Oh, thank you very much.

You must be thrilled with the way it's been received.
It has been amazing. When you start writing an album -and it really is truly from my heart - I got very emotional with it. You kind of keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. The Spice Girls was kind of different to this. But I am absolutely ecstatic that people are getting what I'm doing and enjoying it.

Even if some of the critics don't get it?
Absolutely.

When you wrote 'What Took You So Long', did you think hello, megahit?
I must admit, when I first wrote it, I knew I wanted it to be my first single. It was actually one of the last songs I wrote and I think I wrote it in three hours and it just felt so right. It was this poppy track about something we can all identify with. But you never think this is going to be huge. You just think, this feels right. It's a great song. Completely catchy. I should actually add, the song is catchy without being annoying, like say, the 'Macarena'. That's good, apart from the fact that in England they play it all the time and even I am kind of like, "OK..."

So how was Rumba then?
It really was amazing. All the artists there seemed to be really enjoying it and the crowd absolutely loved it. It was so lovely because a lot of these things are either late at night or for older people. But this was a real family day. It was really nice to see kids and mums and 16-year-old boys. Just really, really nice.

You said in a recent interview that you were nervous about flying to Australia. Are you always nervous flying or is this a post-Sept. 11 development?
I've never been nervous of flying before but because of the tragedy of the World Trade Center, I was very nervous. Everyone is a bit on edge at the moment. But this was the first time I was scared. I mean, forever since I was young, I have never been afraid of flying. But I was walking on the plane with my heart beating fast going, 'OK God, just get me there please.'

Emma, you talk about your mum a lot. What's so special about your mum, apart from the fact that she's yours?
There's so much. The relationship that she has with me and my brother is amazing. She's always been very supportive and there's always been a real respect for my mother from both me and my brother. It was always very open in our house. We always talked about things. She would sit us down and discuss it with us and that has meant I have respected both my mother and father for the way they brought us up and my mum, for me, is such a strong woman. At 40 she started learning karate and she became a black belt and now she does reflexology and she's moved on in her life. She's not stopped. She's kept learning and it really makes me think about things. It sounds terrible now, but at 18 I thought you got to 40 and that was it. But she made me see so much more. She's been unbelievable.

It must have been great then, for you to be in a position to buy her a better car.
It's been the best. It really has, for all my family. When I was younger, it wasn't like we couldn't afford food or anything, but there was more love than anything else. My mum was always giving to us before she thought about herself. So it's so lovely to give something back.

Are any of your songs about your mum?
Yeah. On my album there's a track called 'Higher Love' and it's all about my mum. I get so scared about losing her, but this whole song is about knowing that she will be next to me wherever I am anyway.

Emma Bunton Answers Fan Questions At Top Of The Pops  --   [From Spice News and Spice Girls Asia  ]

Black Text = fans who submitted questions to Top of the Pops
Blue Text =
Emma Bunton

Lousie: If you were to get stuck in a lift, dead or alive, with anyone at all. Who would it be and why?
Emma: I would have to say Elvis Presley because I thought he was very handsome. And I would love him to sing to me with his guitar.

TOTP: Nothing else would happen in the lift, just singing?
Emma: Of course.

James: Who is your favourite artist of this year and does it remind you how hard it was when you first started out with the Spice Girls?
Emma: It's hard. Seeing so many bands out there at the moment, and they are all so good. It must be nice for them, the kids especially, to have all types of music and be influenced by that. And it is hard. You really have to look back and think they are just starting out. But it's lovely to see them all out there.

TOTP: Who has made their mark with you this year?
Emma: There is so many. Dido, who I am a big fan of. And actually, she is a big fan of mine. She loves my album. So, I was very pleased about that. Alicia Keys is another amazing new singer. There is loads but they are my faves.

Julie: Love your new song. It is really upbeat. I would like to know who your favourite musical influences are?
Emma: Well I am glad you like the song because it is very upbeat. And it is a good dancy track. My influences? They are very Motown. Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Chaka Khan definitely.

Elaine: Do you prefer being in a band or a solo artist?
Emma: I would have to say that I feel very lucky that I am able to do both. Being a solo artist is very rewarding in that I write all my own stuff, which is just amazing. And being in a band is great fun. You just have lots of fun with your girlfriends, who you love dearly. I couldn't ever pick one.

Katie: Which of your songs is your favourite and why?
Emma: I actually think my latest because it is so upbeat. It is very girly. I always stick it on when my girlfriends come round and we have a real laugh to it. It gets you smiling. So, I would have to say 'We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight' is my favourite single.

Angie: Which movies do you like to watch when you are having a cosy night in with Jade?
Emma: I am a big Grease fan. I love singing along to them. Jade plays Danny and I play Sandy, and it is very good fun. Oh, that is pretty scary isn't it? But there is lots of great movies out. And I am a big kid so I do like 'Shrek' and 'Toy Story' and stuff like that.

Emma: If you were just an ordinary girl who was a massive, massive fan of the Spice Girls, who would be your favourite Spice and why?
Emma: That is too hard. I don't know? Probably Sporty because she is a sweetheart, she is fun and she has got a great voice.

FANS OPINIONS ABOUT THE CHAT         --   [  Spice Girls Asia   ]
22 January marks a day when Emma finally logs on to her message board to answer questions ask by the fans. But it was not as smooth sailing as it would be, just hours before the chat, the moderator announced there was a change of plan due to high traffic. It just left some fans in panic.

5 minutes before the chat started, the moderator announced a new link that the fans can go to to join the chat. Questions that were asked before needs to be ask again cause of the change. 1700GMT and the chat started and questions began to pour in.

The chat was full of shock, surprises and disappointments.
SHOCK
Emma has announced that there will be no more singles released from A Girl Like Me. Answering a fan's question, she said that she will be writing and recording new material. She added "I'm thinking about writing new material at the moment because there's already been 4 singles released and it'll be better value for my fans to buy the album instead."

SURPRISES
Emma never answered any Spice related questions. Answering the fan's query of why Emma did not answer any of these questions, the moderator said that there were not many Spice related questions asked and therefore they were not answered in a reply in the message board. Instead, she updated fans about her personal life like how did she celebrated her birthday etc.

DISAPPOINTMENT
The chat was about 30 minutes long and therefore not much questions were answered. But fans were more disappointed after all about the sudden plan that there will be no single release except for a new album. A fan commented "I can't believe Emma is just gonna forget about "Sunshine On A Rainy Day" like that, who cares if it's a friggin cover!? " Emma also took the opportunity to say that there are currently no plans for a tour. And another fan added "I'm disappointed that she's not releasing any more singles, but I'm glad she wno't be releasing that song. I'm not surprised she's not releasing any more, though. I'm sure it was the record company's decision, though. It's great that she says she's going to start working on a new album, but after most of her promises from last year seem to have been broken, can we trust this one? I really hope so. I'm most disappointed about the tour being cancelled - I was really looking forward to it. Oh well.. There's always Melanie C. "

So what lies ahead for Emma's solo career, a tour, a new album or a new single? Like Emma says in the chat, there are several surprises yet to be revealed and will be in the months ahead.

Smash Hits Questions Emma Bunton - February 5, 2002   --  [From Spice News  ]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Text = Smash Hits, Hannah Verdier
Blue Text = Emma Bunton

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emma Bunton enlightens us on the best kebab around and why life is an emotional rollercoaster as she reveals her favourite
..celebrity you'd like to meet

Can I have two? Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. I'm a big fan of theirs and I'd want to ask them loads of stuff, like "Are you really that in love?"

extravagance

I love sushi- that's quite extravagant because it's so expensive for something so small. I also like champagne, which makes me so giggly and flirty, but I don't really drink because I like to be in control.

place in the world

Well, my favourite place to be is home! But my second favourite is Italy because it's just so beautiful and mysterious.

post- club snack

I love kebab after a night out. I always go for the salad and the chilli peppers, but never the chilli sauce. I prefer the chicken kebab. It's definitely safer- otherwise you don't know what you are getting.

achievement

Going to No 1 as a solo artist and staying there when people like Janet Jackson and Robbie Williams had their singles out. And becoming an Auntie- I've got a gorgeous nephew. My album going gold was great, too, of course.

Damage song

Ohh, that's a hard one. I loved So What If I? but now I prefer After The Love Has Gone. I like a good ballad, or any song with some kind of emotion, whether it makes me smile, get up and dance or cry. All girls are on an emotional rollercoaster- we love our mums, we fall in love, we have our hearts broken

TV show

Eastenders is my favourite, but I'm really into Pop Idol, I did think, "Aw, bless them!" when I saw some of the auditions because sometimes the judges were a bit hard on them. I don't think I would have auditioned for something like that!

make-up

Definitely the old lip-gloss, I love it! The Body Shops make a great one, but I also like Clarins.

shoes

Actually, I have a pair of favourite boots at the moment- they're from Dolce & Gabanna and they're cream with gold toes.

dressing room demand

A cup of tea and some sarnies. I do like to have my friends and my mum around me because it's quite nerve-wracking just before you go on stage. We all have a laugh to keep my mind off it, so I don't get too nervous.

celebrity you've met

The other day I met Sacha Baron Cohen who does Ali G. We had a good chat for about an hour. And Dido was amazing - she said she and her brother loved my album. I was so excited because I'm such a big fan of hers.
